Standoff ends in Thomasville with no injuries
A larceny investigation early Friday morning turned into a standoff with Thomasville police and a suspect who refused to come out of his home.
According to Chief Jeff Insley, police received a call at approximately 6:15 a.m. Friday regarding a possible suspect breaking into vehicles. Patrol responded and arrested the subject following a short chase and K-9 track.
During the investigation, the suspect gave police information about other stolen property at a mobile home on the 1300 block of Unity Street. When patrol officers arrived, a man answered the door but refused to cooperate.
“We didn't get a very welcome reception at the trailer,” Insley said. “The subject retreated back into the trailer, refusing to come out. Patrol backed off. We went ahead and brought in the SRT team and evacuated the trailers nearby.”
A police negotiator arrived at scene to talk the man out of the home. Insley said a woman in the trailer left when patrol officers arrived.
“She's been very cooperative and everything with her has been good so far,” said Inlsey.
The standoff finally ended around 11:15 a.m. with no injuries reported.
Thomasville police, fire and other emergency personnel were at the scene Friday morning. Police blocked off Unity Street between Albertson Road and Blair Street. Insley said it was unknown whether the man had any weapons.
“It's a possibility so we're making sure we side on caution,” Insley said. “We're going to try to get this resolved peacefully and soon. Now we're just waiting to make contact to see if we can get him out. ”
As of noon Friday, it remained unknown if the man was involved in any vehicle break-ins.
“We don't know if he was doing any of the break-ins but it was another subject that we do have in custody for breaking into vehicles,” said Insley. “During the interview with him and the followup, we found there was property at this particular property. Patrol responded to recover the additional items.”
