Three arrested in assault of 79-year-old woman

Three people have been charged in connection with an attack on an elderly woman with pepper spray.

Thomasville police on Aug. 1 arrested Jennifer Bennett, 29, and Shelley Sessom, 31, both of Thomasville, with robbery with a dangerous weapon. In addition to the two women, a warrant was  issued on William Thomas Welch, 45, of Reidsville for robbery with a dangerous weapon. Welch was arrested by Thomasville police on Aug. 2.

According to a  press release, officers responded to a robbery call at Southgate Plaza, 1033 Randolph St., about 3 p.m. July 29 . Witnesses told police that two or three white women in a silver or grey sedan approached a 79-year-old woman and tried to take her purse. When the victim refused, one of the women sprayed her in the eyes with pepper spray, took her purse and fled the parking lot with the other suspects.

"[The victim] had just walked out of the DMV," Detective Chet Jarrell said earlier this week. "It happened in the parking out, and all we know is there were two, possibly three suspects, involved. We're following up leads now to verify how many were involved."

Davidson County Emergency Medical Services treated the victim at the scene.

High Point Police Officers originally arrested Bennett and Sessoms on warrants from the Davidson County Sheriff’s Office. Davidson County detectives notified Thomasville detectives that Bennett and Sessoms could be connected to the robbery.
