College Hoops: Davidson CC roughs up Jaguars
Last time Davidson County Community College faced Johnston Community College, the Storm had to dig deep for an overtime victory.
Saturday’s clash at Brinkley Gym was a little easier. Well, a lot easier. Davidson led by 22 at the half and caged the Jaguars in a 79-37 flogging.
Johnston dressed just five and were met by a wave of Storm players coming at them. Thirteen of the 15 that entered the game for DCCC scored, led by Jordan Robertson’s 16 points and 11 more from Daniel Lawson. Derek Braziel racked up 16 points for the visitors.
Davidson outrebounded the Jaguars by 20 and assisted on 17 of 31 made baskets. Johnston was held under 20 points in both halves.
“I think we have improved dramatically since the last time we played them in a lot of different phases of the game,” said DCCC coach Matt Ridge. “I am proud of how we have progressed since last time. We are much better defensively. Holding them to 37 points is really good. The guys played hard and at times we showed how good we can be and at times we showed how bad we can be. We need to be consistent and continue to get better.”
Before the Storm Classic this weekend, Davidson will have a tough test today when Mt. Zion Prep makes a second visit to campus. Mt. Zion is the lone blemish on Davidson’s 10-1 record, winning 83-79 nearly a month ago.
“We are going to have a tough one with Mt. Zion,” said Ridge. “They gave us our one loss and I am sure the guys will be ready to play.”
