Prep Hoops: East girls clobbered by Spartans

Don Corry could almost see it coming.
His East Davidson girls basketball team had two lethargic practices coming into Tuesday’s Central Carolina Conference meeting with Central Davidson. When the game finally started, that same effort showed up once more. The Spartans clobbered the Lady Golden Eagles 63-39, handing East its first conference loss and creating a logjam at the top of the league standings.
“We had practiced yesterday and practiced Saturday, and it was the same effort we had on the floor here tonight,” said Corry. “I guess the long break was not good and Central came ready to play.”
Central came out looking like a hungry team that wanted to make a statement in the CCC. The Spartans were up seven at the break and were up five a minute into the second half, before cranking up the offensive heat to burn East.
Madi Hallman had just made a layup to pull the Eagles within five, which was quite remarkable considering the way the team had been playing. They were continually turning the ball over and never seemed comfortable on the floor.
Central looked quite at home in the third quarter, reeling off 12 straight points to lead 44-27. Paige Chavis scored eight straight during that stretch as the Spartans hardly missed a shot.
“I don’t know what’s clicked,” said CDHS coach Kevin Hudson. “I’m pumped, I’m emotional. The last two games we controlled the game. We disrupted what they wanted to do, we got them out of their offense and our guards did what we wanted to do in our offense.”
East continually tried to get the ball in the hands of talented freshman Bayley Plummer, but she was heavily guarded most of the night and the entry passes were off target. The Eagles had 25 turnovers and Plummer was held to a quiet 13 points.
“The body language was not there and they have been somewhere else for about a week,” said Corry. “We will regroup and see if we can bounce back.”
All nine Central players scored led by a 13-point performance by Chavis.
East is 2-1 in the CCC.
