Prep Volleyball: Panthers topple Eagles in four games
Fresh off its 2013 Davidson County Volleyball championship over the weekend, Ledford hit the court on Monday with rival East Davidson paying a visit.
Though the showing was not nearly as impressive for the Lady Panthers, it was more than enough to complete the victory in four games, 25-11, 25-13, 19-25, 25-12.
“I felt like we played well the first two games and it carried over from the county tournament,” said LHS head coach Megan Mayhew. “We kind of let up and sat on our heels. I think a lot of that was sitting in class all day. We have to make that adjustment.”
Ledford coasted through games one and two, but the Golden Eagles began to put it together in the third game to prolong the evening.
With the exception of losing the first point, East led throughout despite Ledford staying in close contact.
Up 8-7, East got a pair of Taylor McPhatter hits to fall to increase the lead to three. The advantage would get as high as six when Ledford called timeout. They rallied back to within three, but scored just one point over the final six points. After three consecutive points were finally answered, Taylor Moretz planted a kill to close out the set.
The cohesive unit from game three never showed up in the fourth. Ledford setter Alyssa Doby (21 assists) kept her teammates active up front and the Panthers sizzled to the 25-12 final.
“First two games we struggled but that third game we found it,” said EDHS coach Kim Warrick. “They know it is there and they did it. They communicated and did the little things. But then the fourth game it was like they were satisfied. They need to learn how to keep it going and win three games.”
Ledford got five kills and five digs from Sierra Cefali, along with six kills from Kayla Leach and five kills by Siarra Walker.
LHS is off to a 2-0 start.
