Prep Wrestling: Ledford grapplers flatten East, 54-19
With football concluding last Friday night for East Davidson and Ledford, the two wrestling programs at each school have been in scramble mode in preparing for early season matches.
On Thursday the two rivals hooked up on the mats and it was clear that the Panthers were well ahead of the Golden Eagles in a 54-19 rout. East won once in the first nine matches to erase any chance of a comeback. Ledford’s only losses came in the 120, 160, 170 and 220 weight classes.
“It was a tough night but it is early,” said EDHS head coach Chris Wagner. “We have got to keep working hard in practice and getting better.”
LHS never trailed as Lupe Cervantes opened up the evening with a pin of Deven Hadsock 55 seconds into the second period in the heavyweight division. Forfeits by the Golden Eagles in the next two classes had them down 18-0 just a couple of minutes into the festivities.
Chris Coble put Aaron Smith on his back to put East on the scoreboard at 120, but five matches would pass by without another point being scored for the home team.
Eddie Nickerson (126), Carter Ellenburg (132), Brad Ross (138), Triston Lovette (145) and Drew Chappell (152) all secured pins to increase the LHS lead to 48-6.
East won three of the last five matches to end the day with momentum moving forward.
It was the third victory in two nights for the Panthers who are now 3-0.
“We have a lot of young guys and the football players have had two days of practice,” said LHS head man Andy Chappell. “Tonight was a good night for us and we have had a good week.”
