CPL: Second half woes continue for HiToms
Zach Daly hit three doubles and drove in four runs as the Gastonia Grizzlies beat the HiToms 6-5 in a rain-shortened game at Finch Field Saturday.
The Grizzlies had scored two runs already off HiToms starter Brody Koerner in the second inning when Daly came up with the bases loaded. Daly cleared the bases with a double down the right field, giving Gastonia an early 5-0 lead.
Ryan Cooper and Alex Raburn, who went 2-for-3 with a run scored, each drove home a run in the bottom of the frame, making it 5-2.
The HiToms inched closer to Gastonia, scoring a run on an error by Gastonia shortstop Tyler Beckwith in the third and another on a Kyle Martin RBI single in the sixth.
Dykota Spiess led off the seventh in a 6-4 game by reaching second on an error by Grizzlies first baseman Jack Morrow. Mike White then bunted a ball down the third base line. Fielding the ball barehanded, Henry Rundio made an ill-advised throw that sailed by Morrow at first base, allowing Spiess to score as the HiToms got within one. White advanced to third on a passed ball, but was stranded there when Cameron Cecil fouled out, Cooper struck out and Raburn grounded to first. The HiToms left 10 men on base for the game.
Koerner (0-3) allowed five runs, one earned, on three hits with four walks and seven strikeouts in four innings to take the loss. The HiToms fell for the eighth game in nine tries to drop to 14-18. Gastonia won for just the second time in their past 11 road games, improving to 11-21. Adam Moore (1-4) earned the victory in relief, giving up a run on two hits while fanning four in 2.1 innings.
