Ledford put themselves in perfect position to knock off Sun Valley in the third round of the 3-A state playoffs Tuesday. One mighty swing of the bat changed all of that.
Brittney Pickett smashed a 3-run homer as the home team surged ahead and took a 5-3 victory. Pickett was also the winning pitcher striking out 10 for the game while going 2-for-3 at the plate.
The Lady Panthers were up 3-1 going into the bottom of the fifth. That is when Pickett left the yard to put her team up 4-3. The Spartans tacked on an unearned run in the sixth to lead by two. Ledford threatened in the seventh but could not get any runs across.
The Panthers got an RBI each from Destiny DeBerry and Jessie Hayworth. Champions of the Mid-Piedmont Conference, Ledford finishes the season with an overall record of 21-6.

West Stanly knocks out East
Defending state champion West Stanly overpowered East Davidson 8-0 in the third round of the 2-A state playoffs Tuesday in Oakboro.
Champions of the Central Carolina Conference, the Golden Eagles end the year with a 17-7 record.
