College Hoops: Davidson tops Southside Virginia in overtime
Davidson County Community College had to work overtime in its first outing since the Christmas break to claim victory.
Southside Virginia pushed the shorthanded Storm to the edge, but DCCC used a 6-0 run in the extra session to squeak out a 73-67 nonconference win Saturday on the road.
With three of its guards out due to various reasons including leading scorer Daniel Lawson — who has suffered a quadricep injury — DCCC did not get to use its press and that allowed the Panthers extra room to work. Davidson struggled shooting in the first half and trailed 24-23 at the break.
A back and forth game for much of the day, DCCC trailed by one with under a minute to go. Brandon Davis was able to hit one of two free throws to force overtime.
In the overtime period, Southside went up three before Davidson came back to tie it with a free throw. That is when Ridge decided to give the press a try and it worked to perfection. The Storm came up with three turnovers and converted two of them into baskets.
“We had not pressed the entire game because we were short on guards,” said head coach Matt Ridge. “We decided to try something different to generate some offense.”
DCCC got another key stop and was able to safely pull away.
Brandon Brown scored 13 points, Brandon Clyburn added 12 and Jonathan Curtis had 11 for the Storm.
DCCC opens Region X competition tonight as they host Caldwell Community College at Brinkley Gym.
