International Baseball: USA Collegiate team shuts out Japan at Finch Field
The USA Collegiate National team may want to think about making Finch Field its permanent home. For a second time this season, they swung a hot bat at the historic ballpark, dominating Team Japan in a 10-0 shutout Sunday. Last time USA was in the Chair City for a game was two weeks ago when they handed the High Point-Thomasville HiToms an 11-6 loss with a 13-hit performance. Sunday's performance was even better for the Americans. They collected 17 hits this time, limiting Japan to only two hits.
Fresh off his College World Series championship with Vanderbilt, Carson Fulmer took the mound for USA and was impressive. He went six innings allowing just one hit to go with four strikeouts. Oregon State's Andrew Moore complete the final three innings with one hit and a strikeout.
Runs were tough to come by in a previous series with Chinese Taipei, but USA had the lumber working well for them on a beautiful day for baseball in front of a packed house.
Vanderbilt's Bryan Reynolds knocked in the first run with a single to left. One batter later Mark Mathias (Cal Poly) smoked a double to the gap in left-center, bringing two more runners home to put the Americans on top 3-0.
It was a similar inning for Japan starter Sachiya Yamasaki in the second. Four more hard hit balls resulted in an additional three runs to push the lead to 6-0 after only two frames. Chris Okey (Clemson) singled and was brought in by Vandy infielder Dansby Swanson's double. Reynolds traded places with his Commodore teammate with a double of his own to left, then D.J. Stewart (FSU) singled in Reynolds for the sixth run.
Fulmer retired the first nine batters he faced, but found some trouble in the fourth. He had walked two and given up the only hit, but found a way to get out of the jam unscathed.
Tate Matheny (Missouri St.) and Mathias tacked on home runs in the fifth and seventh innings, respectively, helping extend the lead to 8-0. Christin Stewart (Tenn.) and Okey rounded out the scoring with RBI hits.
Notes: Swanson, Reynolds and Okey completed the day with three hits apiece... USA got two hits each from Mathias, D.J. Stewart and Matheny... Japan evened the three-game friendly series with a 7-5 win Monday in Wilson.
