Area Sports Briefs (April 5)
McIntire leads East
Ryan McIntire starred at the plate and on the mound as East Davidson downed Southern Guilford 7-2 on Wednesday night.
McIntire improved to 2-2 on the season with seven strikeouts in a seven-hitter and went 2-for-3 with a double and four RBIs for the Golden Eagles (7-4). Kelvin Pena finished 3-for-4 for East, while Nathan Campbell was 1-for-3 with a double and two RBIs.
East has easy time with THS
Nick Williams tossed a two-hit shutout as East Davidson pounded Thomasville 12-0 in a Central Carolina 2-A game stopped after five innings because of the mercy rule on Tuesday.
East (6-4, 3-0 CCC) scored five in the first, one in the second, five in the third and one in the fourth. The Golden Eagles had just two hits but took advantage of six Thomasville (1-7, 0-3 CCC) errors.
Panthers roast Dragons
Bubba White tossed a two-hitter with eight strikeouts and a walk as Ledford beat West Davidson 8-2 on Wednesday night in Tyro.
White ran his record to 5-1 for the Panthers (7-3). Austin Stilley went 3-for-3 with a double, three runs and two RBIs for Ledford, while Jonathan Turner was 2-for-4 with a double, Chaz Shields was 1-for-3 with an RBI and run, Connor Peacock was 1-for-3 with a run and Michael Horrell was 1-for-2 with a run and RBI.
East junior varsity nips Storm
Luke Bayse went 2-for-3 to lead East Davidson's junior varsity by Southern Guilford 6-5. Darren Spivey picked up the win and Austin Hunt was credited with the save for the 7-2 Eagles.
LHS slides by Asheboro
Brenda Luna scored 15 seconds into the match and Tori Farlow added a goal in the 35th minute as Ledford edged Asheboro 2-1 in Mid-Piedmont 3-A Conference action on Wednesday.
Jordan Sapier and Hannah Perryman dished assists for the Panthers (2-5, 2-2), while Ashlynn Mann made 13 saves in goal for Ledford.
LHS gets by SE Guilford
Megan Hayworth tossed a complete game with three strikeouts as Ledford nipped Southeast Guilford 7-4 in Mid-Piedmont 3-A Conference action on Thursday night.
Jessie Hayworth went 2-for-3 with a double for the Panthers (9-2, 6-0), while Destiny DeBerry was 2-for-4 with a triple and RBI. Grace Holland was 2-for-4.
Thomasville gets blanked
Thomasville lost a 9-0 decision to Salisbury Thursday in a Central Carolina match.
Ledford sweeps Wheatmore
Will Harrington led a parade of singles winners as Ledford topped Wheatmore 9-0 on Thursday.
Matt Hartzell, Cameron Maxwell, Alan Bodea, Randy Norwood and Jeffrey Phillips also won in singles for the Panthers (9-5). Harrington-Maxwell, Hartzell-Bodea and Norwood-Phillips prevailed in doubles.
The Golden Eagle Baseball Preseason Youth Clinic will be held this Saturday from 9-11:30 a.m. at the East Davidson baseball field. Instruction will be provided by area coaches and Golden Eagle baseball players. Any baseball player ages 7-14 may participate at no charge.

The Matt Ridge Basketball Academy will be held June 23-26 from 8:30 a.m.-noon each day at Ledford Middle School.
For rising 1st-12th grade students, the goal of the Matt Ridge Basketball Academy is to give campers instruction in the fundamentals of basketball, as well as emphasize team play and sportsmanship. Campers will be divided into groups based on age and ability level. Instruction will be provided by Coach Matt Ridge and members of his coaching staff, former players and other area coaches.
Cost is $95 per camper which includes tuition, instruction, insurance and T-shirt.

HiTom Home Run
The third annual HiTom Home Run sponsored by Novant Health will be held Saturday, June 21 at 9 a.m.
The 5K route will begin at the Big Chair in Thomasville and will end at Finch Field's home plate. There will be a Kid's Fun Run held at 10 a.m at the field. There will be a post-race hospitality table sponsored by Sheets, along with Novant Health gift bags with performance wear shirt, gift cards, a Team USA baseball game ticket and other great inclusions. Entry fee is $25 with proceeds benefiting the Post 87 American Legion program.
A pre-race party will be held June 20 at the HiToms game against Columbia at 7 p.m.
