Prep Football: Marsh touchdown run lifts THS over Mount Airy
Add another classic chapter to the Thomasville versus Mount Airy rivalry.
Ike Marsh's touchdown run with 5:47 left in the game propelled the Thomasville Bulldogs to a thrilling 14-7 victory over the Granite Bears Friday night at Cushwa Stadium. In a series featuring some epic finishes in recent years, this one ranks up there with the best of them.
"Every time we play Mount Airy it's a battle to the very end," Thomasville assistant coach Dickie Cline said. "We're happy to come away with the win."
Marsh touched the ball 10 times on Thomasville's game-winning drive, capping the march with a 1-yard plunge for the clinching score.
"I told my boys that if they stick with me I would stick with them," said Marsh. "They did their job and I had to step up and do my job."
Mount Airy drove deep into Thomasville territory with under a minute to go but a Tommy Rodgers sack on fourth down at the Bulldogs 15 yard line sealed the win.
"It feels good out here getting our first win, especially on our home field," Rodgers said. "We just buckled down and did our assignments."
Mount Airy took its opening possession and marched 55 yards in nine plays for the game's first score. Junior running back Devontae Dobson sprang free for a 16-yard run, setting up the Granite Bears at the Thomasville goal line. Junior Andrew Jones punched it in two plays later, giving Mount Airy the lead with 5:15 remaining in the opening quarter.
"I think we came out a little flat," Cline said. "The defense really settled down and put us in position to win at the end."
Both teams exchanged punts until midway through the second quarter when the defense created the Bulldogs first break of the game. Rodgers recovered a Dobson fumble at the Granite Bears 22-yard line, giving Thomasville great field position.
One play after the Bulldogs picked up their initial first down of the contest, sophomore quarterback Jalen Jenkins from the 10-yard line found junior Chantez Whitaker open in the middle of the end zone for a touchdown, squaring the game at seven.
