Mary Garber Holiday Classic: THS chases off Mustangs in blowout
From the time the ball was tossed in the air, it was all Thomasville in the first round of the Mary Garber Holiday Classic.
Using its suffocating defense, the guards of the Lady Bulldogs came up with steals by the handful repeatedly, breezing by the Parkland Mustangs 74-17 Wednesday at Atkins High School. Timber Tate netted a game-high 17 points, followed closely behind by Christina Coleman’s 16 and 15 more from Joslyn Spires. Off the bench Charity Oliver chipped in with eight, while Tate added seven boards and Spires seven steals.
Thomasville scored the first 19 points of the night using its athleticism and quickness to create turnovers. Much of the game resembled a layup line for the Lady Bulldogs.
Tate was in double figures with only six minutes gone in the contest. Kayla Johnson scored her first three points on a 3-pointer that put THS ahead 19-0. Parkland scored its first points with a minute to go in the opening period and trailed 22-4 by the end of it.
After allotting the Mustangs the first point of the second period, Thomasville scored 12 straight and was up 34-10 at the half.
“When we pressed, it caused turnovers on their part and that is what we want,” said THS coach Brandon Staton. “We want easy baskets in transition and that is our style of play. The girls did a great job starting the game.”
The start of the third period was a carbon copy of the first period. Thomasville pressed, the Mustangs were surrounded and the points began accumulating quickly. A 22-1 run completed the period with the Bulldogs up 56-11.
Staton went to his bench often to get valuable experience that may be needed in the future.
“You never know,” he said. “They need to get some playing time because if someone goes down with an injury or foul trouble, they have got to be ready to step up. The younger kids need to build up their confidence.”
Thomasville advanced to play Reagan in Thursday’s quarterfinals.
