Prep Basketball: Holiday tournaments begin Thursday

Dec. 24, 2013 @ 12:36 PM

Another Christmas season has come and gone which means one thing for those avid basketball fans in Davidson County. It is time for the annual NewBridge Bank Christmas Classic to be held Thursday through Saturday at Ledford High School.
A tradition that began decades ago will continue Thursday in Wallburg. Every school in Davidson County but Lexington will participate in the three-day event that has seen some good players come and go throughout the years.
Absent the last few years, the Thomasville girls will make their return after a successful run to the championship game of the Mary Garber Classic last season. The Lady Bulldogs are perfect through six games and will open the tournament Thursday against West Davidson at 1 p.m.
A week ago East Davidson's girls appeared to be a favorite to win it all, but a loss to North Davidson has shaken expectations up a bit. The Eagles open up with South Davidson on the first day at 4 p.m., while the Black Knights face Southeast Guilford at 2:30. In the other girls game, host Ledford will square off against Central Davidson at 7 p.m.
With Lexington and North opting to play in other tournaments, the field has been cut to six in the boys draw. West Davidson and Southeast Guilford each will receive a bye to Friday's semifinal round, leaving a pair of quarterfinal matchups on Thursday's schedule. East will meet South at 5:30 p.m., with Central and Ledford set to conclude the day at 8:30.
Semifinal games will begin at 4 p.m. Friday with the girls' championship game slated for 6:30 p.m. Saturday with the boys championship to follow around 8.

Sheetz Holiday Classic
Thomasville's boys basketball team will make a return to the NewBridge Classic next season, but for 2013 they will participate in the Sheetz Holiday Classic held at Southwest Guilford High School. The Bulldogs open with Caldwell Academy at 4:30 p.m. Thursday in the SW Guilford annex. The Sheetz Classic also runs through Saturday.
