Lloyd 'Sodge' Black

THOMASVILLE — Lloyd Lee “Sodge” Black went to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, at 3:30 a.m. Friday, December 6, 2013, at the Hospice of Davidson County, surrounded by his family.

He was born on December 21, 1922, to the late James Ernest and Bertha Alford Black in Thomasville, NC.  He was also preceded in death by a son, Randy Lee Black; a sister, Velna Leonard; and a brother, Carlie Black.

He served in the Air Force during WWII on the combat crew 1146 as a right gunner on B-29’s and as a radio operator.  After the war was over he came home and married the love of his life, Irene Parker, on June 29, 1946, who survives of the home.  In 1950 he built and established B & B Self Service (now known as Randy’s Mart #2) with his cousin, Bud Baity.  Later on buying his partner out and buying another store, Randy’s Mart #1, he owned and operated both stores until his retirement in January 1990.  The 12-hour work days never kept him from playing with his children and going to every sporting event they participated in.  He was an avid hunter and loved the out-of-doors.

The most important event of his life was the day 54 years ago when he accepted Jesus as his Savior.  His generosity to strangers, friends, family, and church reflected Christ.  He was a devoted member of Southside Baptist Church where he sang in the choir and was a member of the married couple’s class.

Also surviving to share his precious memories are his son, Mickey Black (Ann); a daughter, Debbie Hinkle (William); and a daughter-in-law, Angie Black; six grandchildren, Lane Black (Deah), Anitra Spencer (Kyle), Dustin Hunt (Melissa), Brittany Gordon, Ryan “Mooky” Black, and Carly Black; and four great grandchildren, Randy Lee Spencer, Cali Cox, Brayden Black, and Cameron Spencer.

Visitation will be at J. C. Green and Sons in Thomasville from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Saturday, December 7, 2013 and other times at the home.  The service will be at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, December 8, at Southside Baptist Church on Fisher Ferry Street, Thomasville, NC.
