Obituary: 'Lib' Childers

Mrs. Elizabeth “Lib” Martin Padgett Childers, 97 years old, passed away October 31, 2013 at Pennybyrn at Maryfield in High Point, NC.

Lib was born in Anderson County, SC on March 28, 1916 to the late John Elihu and Evie Ellison Martin. She was the youngest child with three older brothers, Aaron, Carol, and Norman Martin.

As a child of the Depression, she learned to value faith, education, conservation, hard work, practicality, and sacrifice. After graduating from Lander College in Greenwood, SC in 1937, she married James McPherson Padgett in 1939 and moved to Anderson, SC. She became an integral part of the Low Country community and continued to pursue her teaching career in Walterboro, SC which lasted for twenty-five years.

Having been widowed several years before, she married Forest Edgar Childers, Sr. in 1971 and moved to Thomasville, NC. She joined the Childers family and became an active member in the Fair Grove United Methodist Church. She embraced her life experience and was always ready for the next adventure.

She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers, husband, and step-daughter, Mary Ann Nance. Surviving is her son, Mack Padgett and his wife Carol of Kenai, Alaska; step-sons, Eddie Childers and his wife Linda and Mickey Childers and his wife Patsy, both of Thomasville. Also surviving are step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren.

Lib touched the lives of many, loved actively, and taught us how to do the same. She was an inspiration that loved to laugh and found joy in others. Her funeral service will be held on Sunday, November 3, 2013 at 2 p.m. at Fair Grove United Methodist Church in Thomasville by the Rev. Allan Van Meter. The family will receive friends following the service in the church fellowship hall and at other times at the home of Eddie and Linda Childers, 163 Circle Drive in Thomasville. A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, November 5, 2013 at 1 p.m. at Jacksonboro Baptist Church Cemetery in Jacksonboro, SC.
