Mrs. Barbara Ellen Freeman O’Brien, age 77, of High Point, passed away December 16, 2013 in the Hospice Home at High Point following two and a half years of declining health.
Mrs. O’Brien was born in Guilford County on November 26, 1936. Barbara was the youngest of five children born to Otho Henry Freeman and Beatrice Woodlief Freeman. She graduated from High Point High School in 1955 and Women’s College (now UNCG) in 1956. She was employed in the clerical field at the Employment Security Commission, Gulton Femco Company, the Guilford County School System, the High Point Woman’s Club, and with Thomasville Furniture Industries. She was previously a member of Green Street Baptist Church where she served as Nursery Volunteer for many years. She also was a member of Oak View Baptist Church where she enjoyed beautifying the church lawn. She was presently a member of First United Methodist Church and the Wesley Sunday School Class. Barbara was a faithful volunteer at her church in many capacities including the Parson’s Table and Mobile Meals. She had a true love for gardening, enjoyed preparing meals for those in need and enjoyed an active lifestyle of water aerobics and walking. Barbara and her family were founding members of Knollcrest Swim Club in High Point where they made many happy memories.
She was preceded in death by her brothers, Donald Freeman and O.H. Freeman, and her husband Homer Braxton O’Brien on March 24, 1984.
Barbara was immensely proud of her four children, their spouses, and her eleven grandchildren. Nothing brought her more joy than attending her grandchildren’s special activities. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Susan O’Brien Jones and husband Jimmy Jones and their children Ashley Diane Jones and Caroline Elizabeth Jones; her son and daughter-in-law, Homer Bradley O’Brien and Carolyn Huzzen O’Brien and their children, Megan Lindsay O’Brien and Mackenzie Stewart O’Brien: her son and daughter-in-law, David Neal O’Brien and wife Kara Anton O’Brien and children, David Alexander O’Brien, Anton Nicholas O’Brien, Mary Katherine O’Brien, and Virginia Elizabeth O’Brien; and her daughter and son-in-law Kelly O’Brien White and husband Kevin Harold White and their children Braxton Thomas White, Brenner Harold White, and Brea O’Brien White. Also surviving are her brother Curtis Freeman and a sister Hilda Clodfelter, many nieces and nephews; and she was blessed with many faithful and loving friends.
Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday at 1:00 p.m. at First United Methodist Church by the Reverend Dr. Chris Fitzgerald and the Reverend Fran Moran. The family will receive friends at the church from 12 noon until the hour of the service. Pallbearers will be Jimmy Jones, Kevin White, Braxton White, Brenner White, Alexander O’Brien and Anton O’Brien. Interment in Floral Garden Park Cemetery will follow the church service.
