Rev. Van Dolan Grimes
CONOVER — The Reverend Van Dolan Grimes, 88, of Conover, died Monday, June 3, 2013, at his residence.
A celebration of Mr. Grimes’s life will be held Thursday, June 6, 2013 at Trinity Reformed United Church of Christ in Conover at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Lonny McSherley and Rev. Peggy Stout officiating. Dr. Kenneth Clapp, Senior Vice President of Catawba College, will deliver the meditation. The Grimes family will receive friends in the church Life Enrichment Center following the service.
Mr. Grimes was born May 19, 1925, in Thomasville, the son of Raymond McCoy Grimes, Sr., and Daisy Black Grimes.
After employment as an electrician for Thomasville Chair Company and serving in the US Navy, Mr. Grimes decided to enter the ministry as a second profession.
He earned his B.A. with honors from Catawba College and earned his Bachelor of Divinity and Master of Divinty from Lancaster Theological Seminary, Lancaster, PA.
In June 1958, Mr. Grimes was ordained into the Evangelical and Reformed Church, which merged with the Congregational Christian churches to become the United Church of Christ.
In June 1998, Trinity United Church of Christ in Conover, which Mr. Grimes had served for ten years, honored him as Pastor Emeritus. He also served pastorates in Lexington, Faith, Claremont, and Catawba. In June 2008, he celebrated the 50th anniversary of his ordination at Grace UCC in Newton.
In the early 1970s, at the request of the denomination, Mr. Grimes conducted a United Church tour for laypersons to Scandinavia and the British Isles. He later studied for a month in Greece and Rome with a graduating seminary class.
In addition to serving local congregations, Mr. Grimes also worked as a liaison between the Southern Conference of the UCC and UCC-related institutions Catawba College and Elon University.
Mr. Grimes was a delegate to the General Synod of the United Church of Christ; served on the Council for Health and Services in the denomination; served as a board member of Uplands, a retirement center in Pleasant Hill, TN, and a board member of Hospice of Catawba Valley; and chaired the Commission on Health and Welfare Services of the Southern Conference of the United Church of Christ.
Mr. Grimes also served as chaplain at Abernethy Center, now Abernethy Laurels, as well as on the corporate staff of United Church Homes and Services.
Having earned his Nursing Home Administration license from UNC-Chapel Hill, Mr. Grimes served as administrator of Abernethy Center from 1984-1990. During his administration, he oversaw construction of the residential mall at the center. He also assisted in fundraising and worked as a consultant for the establishment of Piedmont Center in Thomasville.
Mr. Grimes was married for 62 years to Edith Bevan Grimes of Conover, formerly of Thomasville, who survives him.
Survivors also include four children: Dr. Katherine Grimes of Ferrum, VA, Jane Brown of Lincolnton, NC, Julia Hayes of Salisbury, NC, and John Grimes of Wilmington, NC. Mr. Grimes is also survived by a sister, Joyce Huss of Longwood, FL, and eleven grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by brothers Thomas Austin Grimes and Raymond McCoy Grimes, Jr., and a sister, Ernestine Grimes Kennedy.

A service will be held at 3:30 p.m. Friday, June 7, at Our Lady of the Rosary Catholic Church. Davidson Funeral Home Lexington is serving the family.
THOMASVILLE — Carolyn Petree Sheppard, 84, died Monday, June 3, 2013, at High Point Regional Hospital.
A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, June 8, at Holly Hill Memorial Park Cemetery in Thomasville. The family will receive friends at J.C. Green & Sons Funeral Home from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, June 7.
