Man cutting grass on riding mower dies after hit by truck
A Thomasville man mowing his grass on Tuesday died after being hit by a truck in his front yard.
According to Trooper M.A. Leonard with the State Highway Patrol, Bobby Lambert, 73, of 6919 E. Holly Grove Road, died as a result of injuries he sustained when a motorist swerved to avoid a dog and struck him on his riding lawnmower at approximately 3:30 p.m. Lambert died at the scene.
"[Lambert] was mowing his yard at his residence when the truck hit him," Leonard said. "He was well off the road when he got hit."
Edward Burcham, 50, of Thomasville, who was driving the truck east on Holly Grove Road, told troopers he swerved to avoid a dog and ran off the road to the left and into Lambert's yard. Burcham was not injured in the accident. Leonard said troopers are continuing their investigation and will present their findings to the Davidson County District Attorney, who will determine if any charges are to be filed against Burcham.
"We will confer with the district attorney once we complete our investigation," said Leonard. "The investigation is ongoing as we reconstruct the accident and try to gather all the facts."
Leonard said Burcham was going approximately 35 mph in a 45 mph zone at the time of the accident.
