For parents of preschool children in the Triad, August can mark the beginning of an anxious season.
Davidson County Schools hope to alleviate some of the pressure that comes with sending children off to kindergarten through its registration and orientation process. Registration is now open for children who will turn 5 years old on or before Aug. 31.
At Silver Valley Elementary, Principal Kim Johnson Loflin is preparing for her third year of kindergarten orientation — scheduled for March 21 — and screening, a process she refers to as "A Day in Kindergarten." Parents will receive a date for their child to spend a day — From 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. — at the school.
"Parents will have the opportunity to turn in any paperwork, while students will do activities in the classroom," Loflin said. "They go through a regular kindergarten day, just as something extra we do to help the children and the parents get comfortable. And it helps us get to know the child better."
Loflin's staff at Silver Valley, including prekindergarten teacher Meghan Williamson, is excited about welcoming a new group of students and helping parents transition from preschool to elementary education.
"It's really neat to see the parents come in and see what to expect here," Williamson said." They get to see it's different. They're moving to the next step. It's just a really neat process and just helps to smooth the transition."
Angela Moore, principal at Thomasville Primary School, said her school begins its kindergarten registration process in May with unofficial tours of the school and continues through the summer months in preparation for the first day of classes.
"We have days of kindergarten screening and countdown to kindergarten in the summer, through a transition program," Moore said. "During the school year, we have preschool students who do a tour of the school. That usually starts in May."
For registration in Davidson County, parents must submit a copy of their driver's licenses, two proofs of residency, certified birth certificate and immunization records.
