A man involved in a head-on collision of two SUVs Tuesday has been charged with DWI and operating a vehicle without a license.

Zachary Poole, 19, of 304 Powers Road, Thomasville, also faces charges of failure to yield right-of-way and failure to wear a seat belt. Poole had previously been charged with driving with no operator’s license on April 16 and May 5.

His initial court date for the DWI charge has been set for July 3. He also has court dates on the previous charges on June 26 and July 31.

According to a press release, Poole, 19, was driving a 2001 Dodge Durango north on Denton Road when he failed to yield the right-of-way as he attempted to turn left onto Fisher Ferry Road. Poole’s SUV struck a 2008 Toyota Highlander, which was traveling south on Denton Road.

The accident, which happened at 11:30 a.m. near the intersection of Fisher Ferry Road and Cedar Lodge Road, resulted in the injuries of four people, including an 11-month old child.

Monica Persiani, 29, of Thomasville, was airlifted to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center after emergency personnel, including Thomasville Fire Department and Thomasville Rescue Squad, removed her from her vehicle. As of 3:07 p.m. Tuesday, her condition was listed as critical.

Persiani's 11-month old daughter was transported to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, where she is listed in stable condition.

The child was properly secured in the rear seat and did not appear to suffer any injuries.

"I can't stress enough how important it is to have your kids strapped in with a seat belt or a child safety restraint system," said TPD Detective Brad Saintsing.

Poole and his passenger, Amber Smith Kincaid, 28, were listed in stable condition after being transported. According to a May 22 press release, Poole was charged by citation because he is currently being treated for injuries at Wake Forest Baptist Hospital.

According to the Department of Corrections, Poole had faced charges in 2009 and 2010 of felony breaking and entering, larceny after breaking and entering, breaking and entering vehicles, larceny and assault and battery.
