Two Thomasville organizations — Tom A. Finch YMCA and Archdale Office Supply — teamed up to deliver donated school supplies to two city schools.

The YMCA organized the give-back promotion in September and raised more than $1,800 to purchase the supplies. Those items were split between Thomasville Primary School and Liberty Drive Elementary and delivered on Dec. 16 to the schools by Archdale Office Supply.

"What we did was offer a membership special in September," said Beth Todd, director of marketing for the Tom A. Finch YMCA. "For anyone who joined, our joining fee was reduced to $20. That $20 went to buy school supplies for local schools. All of our money raised from joining fees in September went to purchase school supplies.

"We wanted to do something toward the beginning of the school year that would give back to the teachers, kids in our community and the schools. Lots of folks give backpacks, so we wanted to think of something a little different."

Two Archdale Office Supply employees, both former Ledford High School baseball stars, unloaded several boxes of supplies. Justin Livengood and Ryan Fitzgerald were pleased to partner in this project, because of their love for the greater Thomasville area.

Livengood recently returned from his first season of Minor League Baseball after he was drafted by the San Diego Padres in June. He smiled as he explained why he had an extra skip in his step unloading the boxes.

"We were all sitting around talking about playing high school baseball the other day. I'd do anything to be able to go back and play there," Livengood said of his old stomping grounds at Ledford. "That little chunk of area we grew up in, that place means more to me than anything."

Todd expressed her excitement for the partnership between the YMCA and Archdale Office Supply. Because of their efforts, many students who would not have had access to pens, pencils, folders, binders and other items are now accommodated.

"They supply all our needs over at the YMCA, so we went to them and said this is what we need, here's the list and here's the money," Todd said. "They were good about putting it all together for us and delivering it to the schools. We're just excited that we could give back to schools in this way and get them some things that they need."
