Thousands without power
Tens of thousands who live surrounding communities are without this morning after the worst ice storm in the area in the past 12 years.
Duke Energy reports more than 31,000 power outages in Davidson. Guildford was hit heavy with more than 145,000 and Randolph County reports nearly 42,000.
As of 3:45 p.m., there was no information when power would be restored. The Duke Energy website map reads "accessing damage."
The city of High Point Electric Utilities Department website indicated that 40,224 customers were without electricity as of 11 a.m. The city had received 2,687 calls.
Thomasville Times Sports Editor Zach Kepley noted that National Highway was closed on his way into work.
The last time the area endured an ice storm like the one that started as snow and sleet Thursday night was December 2002, when an ice storm paralyzed surrounding areas for days.
