Elderly woman pepper sprayed in purse snatching
Thomasville Police Department is asking for help identifying several suspects who attacked an elderly woman with pepper spray.
According to a TPD press release, officers responded to a robbery call at Southgate Plaza, 1033 Randolph St., Monday afternoon at approximately 3 p.m. Witnesses told police two or three white females in a silver or grey sedan approached a 79-year-old woman and tried to take her purse. When the victim refused, one of the women sprayed her in the eyes with pepper spray, took her purse and fled the parking lot with the other suspect or suspects.
"[The victim] had just walked out of the DMV," Detective Chet Jarrell said. "It happened in the parking out, and all we know is there were two possibly three suspects involved. We're following up leads now to verify how many were involved."
Davidson County Emergency Medical Services treated the victim at the scene.
"It's a shame, it really is," said Jarrell. "[The victim] said she is going to be fine. It's very painful obviously, but fortunately she wasn't injured any more than that. She went home after being treated by the paramedics."
Anyone with information is asked to call TPD at 475-4265 or Crime Stoppers of Thomasville at 476-8477. "Hopefully people will call us with information," Jarrell said. "Maybe somebody saw something and didn't think anything of it. Hopefully when this gets out people will start calling in with more information than what we have."
