Thomasville City Schools are set to initiate kindergarten screening for the 2013-2014 school year. The screenings will take place from April 30 to May 3 at Thomasville Primary School.

Melanie Crowder, an instructional coach at Thomasville Primary who helps oversee the kindergarten registration, said parents will need to meet a handful of requirements to enroll their children.

"They have to be 5 years old on before Aug. 31, 2013 to enroll," Crowder said. "A few things parents need to bring include their child's birth certificate, certificate of immunization and proof of a physical. This is a process that gives us an idea of where the children are developmentally. They come to kindergarten regardless, but we can assess them through this program."

In addition to the above materials, a parent or guardian will need to bring two proofs of residency for each child.

Crowder said the screening process will be very similar to what the Davidson County Schools system provided for its students in March. Due to the volume of students screened last year, she urges parents to avoid waiting until the last minute to register their students.

"They need to call as soon as possible," Crowder said. "Last year, we had 11 classes and over 220 children, or like 21 per class."

To register a child for screening, please call the school to make an appointment at 474-4160.
