Thomasville Police Department honored the six North Carolina peace officers who lost their lives in the line of duty last year.

In 1962, President John F. Kennedy proclaimed May 15 Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week in which it falls National Police Week. The memorial service was held May 14 at Thomasville Church of God.

A wreath was placed at the fallen officers memorial, erected in 2001, and its K9 memorial, at TPD headquarters on Guilford Street. Thomasville Funeral Director Scott Kramer donated the memorial to honor Cheko, a K9 who died on May 25, 2011, from an unknown poison.

Six Thomasville Police officers have died in the line of duty. Representatives from the Davidson County Sheriff's Office, Lexington Police Department and Denton Police Department attended the memorial services.
