Events set for MLK observance

Terri Lee Fisher, Bishop Van Johnson to be honored
Dec. 26, 2013 @ 09:50 AM

“Justice without violence, reconciliation without humiliation and redemption without destruction,” is the theme of the 2014 Martin Luther King Jr. National Holiday celebration in Thomasville, said members of the Martin Luther King Social Action Committee.

The celebration, from Jan. 12-20, will mark the 28th anniversary of the King National Holiday and the 13th anniversary of the local event.

During the week, the committee will honor two recipients of the 2014 MLK Community Service Award: Terri Lee Fisher of Fairgrove Family Resource Center and Bishop Van Johnson, pastor of Union Baptist Church.

A highlight of the celebration will be the 13th annual oratorical contest that will be held at Rich Fork Baptist Church in Thomasville.

“Dr. King was an advocate for equality in education and this major event is the organization’s effort to help bring to pass one of Dr. King’s dreams,” said  Dr. George B. Jackson, founder and chairman of the Martin Luther King Social Action Committee and pastor at Citadel Ministries in Thomasville.

The Committee will give more than $7,000 in scholarships and awards again this year.

“We hope to entice more students from more diverse backgrounds to participate in the oratorical contest and to provide needed resources for those students who are preparing for college,” Jackson added.

Additions to this year’s celebration will include the gospel marathon at the T. Austin Finch Auditorium at 4 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 19. This event is free to the public.
