Thomasville City Schools Board of Education Thursday named an interim superintendent as the search for Keith Tobin's successor continues.

Georgia Marshall, TCS chief administrative officer, will serve as acting superintendent while board members narrow down a lengthy list of potential candidates vying for the permanent position. Tobin, the TCS superintendent since 2008, announced his retirement in May effective June 30.

"I'm excited about moving forward," Marshall said. "The new role for me will be short-lived but I'm excited about helping the process move into 2013-14 school year because there's lots of work to be done."

With summer school business in full swing, TCS board members wanted a superintendent in place as the system prepares for a new calendar starting in August. Marshall had served as principal at Thomasville Middle School before assuming an administrative role in 2010. Marshall has been with the system since 2001.

"We do not have a superintendent with Mr. Tobin retired but school continues to go on even though we don't have students in the building," said board member Cheryl Hodges. "Things have to be done and problems arise. We have to have someone in charge. Until we have a person in place, we are in capable hands with Ms. Marshall."

More than two dozen candidates applied for the vacant position this month, Hodges said. Board members are conducting interviews, but there is no timetable to have a new superintendent in place.

"The search is going very well," Hodges said. "We had 26 applicants for the job and the position was only open for two weeks. I think that is kudos for our school system."

Marshall said her goal is to keep everything running smoothly until a new superintendent is hired.

"My focus is to make sure we won't lose any ground in the interim," said Marshall. "My job is to make sure all the plans we have in place are continued so when the new person comes in they can just pick up and continue."
