Abigail Westmoreland, 14, a freshman at Ledford High School, will play five roles in High Point Ballet's production of "The Nutcracker,” with performances set in Lexington.
This burst of talent is not a surprise to her parents, Christine and Anthony Westmoreland. They have watched her evolve as a dancer since she was 2 years old.
Westmoreland credits the talents of Gary and Rita Taylor. Gary Taylor serves as the artistic director and choreographer. Rita Taylor, who designs the costumes, serves as an artistic director and is founder of the company.
"A lot of times it will bring me to tears [to see her on stage]," said Christine Westmoreland of her daughter. "Every performance I see her grow and mature as a dancer. "It makes me extremely proud as a parent because she works so very hard."
Abigail's roles include Brigella Doll, Battle Rat, Snow Flake, Marzipan Princess and Flower Corps.
Abigail's hard work is balanced as an A/B student. Dancing is her primary activity outside of school.
Westmoreland encourages the community to attend a performance. Rita Taylor adds that the "Land of the Sweets" performances set for 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 15, is an interactive opportunity for children.
"This Nutcracker show is tailored for children and features a parade of characters giving everyone a chance to meet the Nutcracker cast in full costume and have photo and autograph opportunities," said Taylor.  "Make sure to come early for the festivities as doors open one hour prior to performances."
Sets are by award-winning designer, Howard Jones. Lighting is by Jennifer O’Kelley.
