Arrests made in 2012 Thomasville bank robbery
Thomasville Police Department arrested two men in connection to a bank robbery last summer.
According to documents obtained from the Davidson County Clerk of Courts Office, Clarence D. Lee, 41, of 5365 Esther Lane in Charlotte, and Avery Lamar Clark, 24, of 4540 Mill Village Road in Raleigh, were arrested and charged with one count of robbery with a dangerous weapon following an investigation into the bank robbery at Members Credit Union, 100 Lines St., on July 18. Arrest warrants state the men threatened two people inside the bank with a semi-automatic handgun before fleeing the scene with more than $22,000.
TPD spokesperson Detective Brad Saintsing declined to comment on the arrests.
“I can’t comment on an ongoing investigation,” Saintsing said.
Following the robbery, witnesses told investigators a black man described as 5-feet 7 inches to 6 feet tall, between 20 and 30 years old and weighing approximately 160 pounds entered the bank brandished a handgun and demanded money. The man was wearing a bandana over his face and ordered bank customers, which included five adults and two children, to get down. The suspect got into a waiting car driven by a bald, black man.
An off-duty Greensboro police officer arrived at the bank as the suspects fled and followed them for several blocks. The officer eventually lost the suspects but managed to provide TPD with a vehicle description and license tag number. Investigators located the vehicle, a 1998 Buick Regal, several hours later at the dead end of Warner Street.
Saintsing did not identify which of the two suspects in custody entered the bank and who drove the get-away car.
“That’s information we’re not releasing at this time,” said Saintsing. “This investigation is ongoing and we expect more arrests in the future.”
TPD arrested Clark on April 11 and Lee on April 30.
