UPDATE: TPD seeks identification of man found dead in 2011
Thomasville Police Department on Monday released a facial approximation of an unidentified man found dead more than a year ago.
Officers discovered the body on Dec. 19, 2011, in the woods behind Old Dominion Freight Line, Inc., 500 Old Dominion Way. TPD's recently completed facial approximation by the FBI may give some insight as to what the man may have looked like.
"Hopefully, we can get this individual identified and bring closure to the family or some loved ones," Chief Jeff Insley said. "We could at least alert them that something happened to him or that he's passed. This is someone's family member."
Following the discovery in 2011, the N.C. Medical Examiner's Office determined the person to be a white man, possibly of mixed ancestry, approximately 20 to 30 years old and between 5 feet 4 inches and 5 feet 6 inches tall. When TPD investigators could not produce a positive identification of the man, the FBI facial approximation specialists were asked to conduct the analysis. An FBI laboratory artist, working directly with a forensic anthropologist, created the facial approximation.
"It was some technology that one of our detectives saw in a training class," said Insley. "We were able to network and get it done. Everyone puts forth a lot of effort into the clearing up the cases that come in and giving them the attention that they need to bring closure. I think it says a lot of their character and their work ethic."
Investigators believe the man was dead for approximately four months before a person walking in the woods off Bassett Drive and Albertson Road found the remains and notified police. No foul play is suspected at this time. TPD is not releasing the cause of death pending notification of kin.
Anyone with information is asked to call TPD at 475-4286 or Crime Stoppers of Thomasville at 476-8477.
