Spring Daze kicks off Saturday
Thomasville will host its 10th annual Spring Daze event from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, as the festival is once again set to take over E. Main Street with about 100 vendors.
Sponsored by the Thomasville Beautification Committee, this year's edition will feature a lecture series from a curator, groundskeeper and author of "North Carolina's Gardening Guide."
According to Carol Brown, committee chairperson, the rain or shine event will showcase its usual assortment of plants, flowers, birdhouses, outdoor furniture, pottery, jewelry, food and music. The music stage will be at the Clock Tower. Mitch Snow will perform.
"It's a great opportunity, because it's the weekend before Mother's Day," Brown said. "People come into town to buy garden accessories, bird houses and such. I even had a lady say she's coming in to buy Christmas presents."
The event offers a series of lectures in the corner parking lot at Memorial Park Drive. Seating will be available, but the public is encouraged to bring a chair.
Todd Sechrist with Grounds Crew Landscaping offer a lecture at 9 a.m. about container gardening.
Toby Bost, author of “North Carolina’s Gardening Guide,” will offer three lectures: 10 a.m. on successful gardeners; 11 a.m. on eco-friendly landscapes; and at noon, a question and answer session and a plant clinic.
Adrienne Roethling, garden curator at Paul J. Ceiner Botanical Gardens in Kernersville, will speak at 1 p.m. about how to ensure an attractive landscape.
Joy Thompson, owner of Southern Sisters Restaurant. will conclude with remarks at 2 p.m..
Brown said the involvement of community volunteers is what continues to make Spring Daze a success year after year.
"Our committee works really hard to get ready for this event. A dozen of us make up a volunteer group that puts this together every year," Brown said. "It's time-consuming, but we enjoy doing it. It's a way to give back to the community.
"We've got a lot of new things planned this year. We just hope everybody comes out and enjoys the day."
