What's your New Year's resolution?
Excitement surrounds the Tom A. Finch YMCA as the organization moves into the new year.
Launching three new programs and offering a membership special for the first two weeks of 2014, Beth Todd, director of marketing, contends the YMCA is the place to be in January.
"We're excited about our three new programs," Todd said. "This is something brand new for us."
This program, which the YMCA is referring to as its CHAAMP program — Community Helping All Achieve Maximum Potential — will offer opportunities to engage in a special setting for those with special needs. Most likely, these meetings will take place on a Saturday afternoon, allowing participants to swim, dance, bowl and simply have a social outing each week.
"That is a grassroots effort by [staff members] Beth Mills and Alex Loughlin, who have a lot of experience working with kids with special needs," said Jarrod Dunbar, director of membership. "Because of their experience, we felt like there was a need for that program. We just feel like there is a niche for it."
PIT, a small group program, will offer intense personal training for members only, similar to the very popular cross-fit exercises.
The final new program is called Challenge 180, a 14-week weight loss challenge for members and nonmembers. It was inspired by Transformation Nation Triad, which the YMCA hosted in partnership with the WXII television affiliate last year. The program will include two exercise classes per week with a trainer.
"WXII is going to move onto some other things, but we still wanted to offer our own program," Todd said. "As a Y, we're supposed to reflect what our community is about and what our community needs. We've got a group of folks who have been here a long time. At some point, you're ready for something new."
For a limited time only, the YMCA membership fee will be reduced to $14, down from its original price of $60. For more information about the Tom A. Finch YMCA, call 475-6125.
