Miss Thomasville Katy Ezzell and her sister Krissy Ezzell, 2012 Miss Outstanding Teen, invite members of the Chair City community to eat at East Coast Wings in Thomasville on Dec. 18.
The girls, their mother Jennifer Ezzell and the Ezzells' business manager Travis Green arranged for a daylong fundraiser to support the scholarship fund for the Miss Thomasville Pageant. Coupons will be available at the restaurant during lunch and dinner for those who wish to donate 10 percent of their purchase to replenish a scholarship fund that has for years contributed to the education of pageant winners.
"To be able to help raise that money for the future contestants, it's going toward their future," said Krissy Ezzell, a junior at Wheatmore High School. "You're not only helping yourself. You're helping others, which has been the goal of the Miss Thomasville Pageant."
Katy Ezzell — who won a $500 scholarship by virtue of winning the 2012 crown — credits Gretchen Wallace, winner of the 2002 Miss Thomasville Pageant, for giving back to younger contestants like herself and hopes to do the same with the funds raised Dec. 18.
The goal is to raise $1,000.
"Gretchen was very helpful to us and was more excited to help me with interviews," Katy Ezzell said. "With her help, I felt 110 percent confident whenever I walked out of the room."
Morgan White, executive director of the pageant, hopes the efforts of Katy and Krissy will draw the attention of young ladies in Thomasville who represent prospective pageant hopefuls.
According to White, the number of contestants has fallen off in recent years. Having seen numbers tumble from more than 20 contestants to five or six, White thinks a fundraiser of this nature could stem the tide and help reverse the declining trend.
"We really want to bring back the legacy of the pageant," White said. "A lot of former pageant winners come back and sponsor. It keeps their legacies alive."
Coupons for the fundraiser will also be available online via the Miss Thomasville Scholarship Pageant Facebook page and Thomasville Times website at tvilletimes.com. East Coast Wings is located at 920 Randolph St. in Thomasville.
