Avis’ Fine Jewelry re-opens
A local jewelry shop opened its doors Friday under new ownership. The anticipated grand “re-opening” of Avis’ Fine Jewelry in Thomasville was held by new store owner Heather Lewis, who previously worked as a sales associate for original owner Avis Brewer since 1995.
"This has been my dream for years to own the store," Lewis said.
Brewer and Brewer’s husband Cecil have been instrumental in the transition of the last five months, which came after the store was robbed in June.
"The store was robbed, so they decided to retire after that,” said Lewis. "I went to school for gemology, so when they said they were going to retire, I said ‘well, let me see what I can do.'
She and Cecil have helped us a lot. She was in here two days helping us clean to get ready. She is backing us 100 percent and you'll probably see her in here from time to time."
Lewis vows to maintain the success Avis Brewer had before retiring by retaining a full-service approach and a few familiar faces. David Reynolds, who has spent six years with Avis, will stay aboard as store manager.
"It's been kind of a strange experience, opening and closing the store in eight months time," Reynolds said. "It's not something you usually get to do.
“I’ve known Heather for 20 years. She actually started in the business with me back when she was 17 years old. It's exciting. I always said if there was somebody I'd go into business with, it'd be her. We work well together."
Both Lewis and Reynolds believe familiarity and continuity will continue to make Avis’ Fine Jewelry a fixture in the Thomasville community.
"A lot of our customers know us, so that will help," said Lewis.
