Thomasville Police Department charged a volunteer coach in the Thomasville City Schools system with having an inappropriate relationship with a student.

According to a TPD press release, Thomasville High School's resource officer on Tuesday contacted detectives regarding a sex offense that occurred on campus on Oct. 28.

Detectives spoke with a female student and, according to the release, learned she had sexual contact with 26-year-old Byron Lattimore, a volunteer coach at both THS and Thomasville Middle School.

Detectives arrested and charged Lattimore with sexual activity between school personnel and a student. TCS Superintendent Dr. Maria Pitre-Martin said Lattimore has been suspended from coaching.

"We are aware of it and have cooperated with law enforcement," Pitre-Martin said. "They are dealing swiftly with this particular case. It was brought to our attention by someone in the community and we certainly contacted law enforcement as quickly as we could.  This person has been suspended from all activities with our school system."

Lattimore was placed in the Davidson County Jail and issued a $25,000 bond. He is scheduled to appear in court on Nov. 20.
